The Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development is seeking a dynamic and high energy Director to lead its International Affairs and Business Development efforts. We are seeking an experienced leader to help attract new foreign direct investment into Kentucky by promoting a pro-business culture and supporting new investment, job creation and retention.

Job Details

Responsibilities include:

  • Attract new foreign direct investment in Kentucky through effective economic activities and provide assistance and guidance to existing foreign direct owned companies who are currently operating in Kentucky.
  • On-board, nurture and develop new and existing foreign direct investment companies to strengthen and grow.
  • Research foreign markets and trade opportunities related to Kentucky’s industry base and assist in the management of all the cabinet’s international business development offices. 
  • Participate in trade seminars, overseas trade missions and trade show in order to promote the state in international markets.
  • Promote export growth opportunities to KY businesses directly, through the KY World Trade Center or US Department of Commerce offices, working with overseas offices, international service providers and trade organizations.
  • Analyze/interpret federal/foreign trade regulations, licensing, tariff and certification requirements.
  • Serve as Ombudsman helping FDI companies successfully navigate government agencies to decrease startup times and reduce costs.
  • Develop International business development strategy, including expansion into new global markets.
  • Prepare written/web based proposals and marketing materials regarding Kentucky’s corporate climate providing excellent opportunities.
  • Utilize cluster mapping with other economic and demographic tools to identify, target and market to potential companies considering U.S. investment.
  • Identify and develop relationships with foreign investment funds including sovereign wealth funds, private equity and family offices interested in investing in to the Commonwealth via P3 projects, or debt private placements into Kentucky private companies seeking capital partners
  • Speak at conferences, events and panels representing the Cabinet.
  • Possess a sense of urgency and ability to prioritize projects to competitively serve companies making location and expansion decisions.
  • Nurture relationships with a wide array of customers in different industries, communities and cultures.
  • Effectively and responsively address customer problems and pursue viable solutions.
  • Identify, gather and analyze market indicators to measure and monitor economic development activities.
  • Work closely with other teams within the Administration to support Department and Cabinet Goals.
  • Manage Kentucky’s offices overseas.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree, preferably in business, international economics, marketing or a related field.
  • A tremendous level of knowledge and experience in working with global firms from a wide variety of industries as they evaluate the Commonwealth for new investment.
  • 5+ years of sales management experience in an Economic Development agency, a consulting firm, or Federal Government Agency focused on economic development and/or trade. B2B Experience with large contracts, large accounts, consultative sales, serving multiple business sectors a real plus!
  • Proven record of accomplishment in senior level supervisory and leadership roles.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, competitive spirit.
  • Ability to work with senior executives from both global and domestic companies.
  • Comfortable working with small companies in rural communities.
  • Willing to travel and work after normal business hours.

Location: Frankfort, KY
