Job Details

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking, and will appoint, a Commissioner to lead and manage the Department.

The Commissioner will:

•             Work for and report to the Commission, a nine-member statutory body appointed by the Governor of Kentucky, and the Secretary of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, the Executive Branch unit of Kentucky state government to which the Department reports;

•             Lead the agency in the fulfillment of its mission: to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife resources and provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, trapping, boating and other wildlife-related activities;

•             Provide supervision and control of all activities, functions, appointments, and employees of the Department, a Kentucky state government agency with more than 500 employees and an annual operating budget in fiscal year 2018 of $55.4 million;

•             Direct and manage all administrative divisions of the Department: Wildlife, Fisheries, Law Enforcement, Information & Education, Engineering & IT, Public Affairs, and Administrative Services;

•             Direct and oversee strategic planning, personnel management, program oversight, budget development and tracking, and statutory, regulatory, and policy development;

•             Establish policies and guidelines providing for the operational framework and priorities of the agency, at the direction of the Commission;

•             Provide outstanding representation for the Department in its interactions with the public and membership groups, the executive and legislative branches of Kentucky state government, including the General Assembly and the Legislative Research Commission, and all other local, state and federal government entities;

•             Develop and recommend all regulations necessary for the successful execution of the Department’s statutory responsibilities to the Commission, the Cabinet, and the General Assembly for approval;

•             Work effectively with Executive and Legislative Branch officials to develop and recommend legislation to the General Assembly that is beneficial to the fish and wildlife resources of the Commonwealth, and to sportsmen and sportswomen;

•             Represent the agency in regional, national, and international associations, as warranted;

•             Continually abide by and reinforce for all employees the importance of compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements which govern the Department and its work.

Must have knowledge of and experience in the requirements for the protection, conservation and restoration of the wildlife resources of Kentucky, and requisite executive level management knowledge and experience. Proficiencies include:

Salary: Negotiable, commensurate with experience

Work Schedule: Full Time (37.5 hrs/wk)
FLSA Designation: Exempt
